Submit Your Questions for Our 2013 Candidate Forums

We're just one week away from our first candidate forum. This Sunday, UNC law professor Barbara Fedders, a specialist in juvenile delinquency and criminal law and an advocate for school discipline reform, will moderate a live online candidate forum for the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Board of Education.

Each forum will consist of a real-time written conversation between the candidates and the moderator. Though the moderator will have final say in question selection, we want you to contribute! To submit a question comment on this post, use the OP contact form (http://orangepolitics.org/contact), tweet at us (http://twitter.com/orangepolitics) or write on our Facebook page (http://facebook.com/orangepolitics).

The school board forum is the just the first in a series of five candidate forums we're hosting this fall. The full schedule is:

  • Chapel Hill-Carrboro Board of Education: Sunday, September 22, 7-9 pm, moderated by Barbara Fedders
  • Hillsborough Board of Commissioners: Sunday, September 29, 7-9 pm, moderated by Vanessa Shortley
  • Carrboro Board of Aldermen: Sunday, October 6, 7-9 pm, moderated by Kirk Ross
  • Chapel Hill Town Council: Sunday, October 13, 7-9 pm, moderated by Kirk Ross
  • Conversation With the Mayors: Sunday, October 20, 7-9 pm, moderated by Mark Chilton

Be sure to observe each forum and participate in a simultaneous, separate blog thread to discuss the forum and propose follow-up questions. OP editors will monitor this discussion in real time and feed readers' questions and follow-up topics to the moderator. Candidates will also be encouraged to ask each other questions and to comment on each others' responses.

Will there be a recording available for each of these forums that I can listen to at a time that works for me?Thank you for covering live as well.

The forums are actually text-based conversations, so you'll be able to go back and read them at anytime. Thanks!!

(if you can) don't forget to turn off the auto-refresh function after the forum is over.  These are tough to read later when they refresh frequently.  (does Jason need a reminder of this requirement in his work to move to Drupal 7?)-J

I'm finding it interesting to look back at our last municipal forums. So many of the issues are still relevant today!http://orangepolitics.org/elections-2011/forums/carrboro-aldermenhttp://orangepolitics.org/elections-2011/forums/chapel-hill-town-councilThe rest are at http://orangepolitics.org/election-info/forums if people are curious.

I'll start my suggested questions with an easy one.  With the potential for two openly gay mayors in Orange County, can we step up our Pride celebration game relative to Durham? Can't let the Dukies have all the pride. =pOn a more serious note, how do the Orange County mayors see their roles in standing up to an increasingly aggressive and hostile state legislature that has proven an unwillingness to show deference to municipalities in setting local policy and control of municipal assets.
