Sunday Open Thread: 36 Hours in Chapel Hill-Carrboro

In case you missed it (in the event that all of your Facebook friends didn't post it), the New York Times posted a "36 Hours in Chapel Hill-Carrboro" video and piece last week. The video features several local restaurants and bars, including Al's Burger Shack, ONE Restaurant, the Baxter Bar & Arcade, Neal's Deli, among others, and local attractions like the NC Botanical Gardens, Ackland Art Museum, and the Carolina Basketball Museum.

The editors of OrangePolitics thought the video was superb and truly highlighted some of the best food, drinks, and attractions in our community. But we did want to ask you: What do you think the NY Times missed that is a must-see if you're just dropping in for a few days? Let us know in the comments.

What do you love about Chapel Hill?

Did you know that visitor spending in Chapel Hill and Orange County accounts for over $160 million in economic impact ever year? Tourism is a clean business that creates jobs and tax revenue that helps keep our county the amazing place it is. I was appointed to represent the Town Council on the Chapel Hill/Orange County Visitor's Bureau at the start of this year, and am committed to increasing the economic impact from tourism over this year.

To celebrate the great visitor and tourist attractions in Orange County, I'm headed on a stay-cation over Memorial Day weekend. I'll be packing my bag on Friday and won't return until Monday afternoon, but I'll never be more than 25 miles away from my home. I'm spending Friday night in Carrboro, will be visiting Hillsborough and Northern Orange on Saturday, and will be finishing up in the southern part of heaven on Sunday.

Chapel Hill 2020 Special Topic: Tourism as a Community-Based Economic Development Strategy

Chapel Hill 2020 will offer the special topic presentation "Tourism as a Community-Based Economic Development Strategy" by Laurie Paolicelli, executive director of the Chapel Hill-Orange County Visitors Bureau. The public is invited to the presentation to be held at noon Wednesday, Feb. 22, in the Council Chamber of Chapel Hill Town Hall. The public event will be aired live on Chapel Hill Government TV-18 and streamed on the Town of Chapel Hill website at http://www.townofchapelhill.org/index.aspx?page=1850

According to the NC Department of Commerce, visitors traveling to and within the state of North Carolina spent a record $17 billion in 2010, supporting more than 40,000 North Carolina businesses and directly supporting 183,900 jobs all across the state. State and local tax revenues generated as a result of visitor spending total more than $1.5 billion annually.

North Carolina ranks as the 6th most visited state in the United States. How does Chapel Hill build upon the state's status as a top destination for visitors? What challenges does the local hospitality industry face in light of the current economy? What new developments are taking place? These topics and more will be discussed.

Date:

Wednesday, February 22, 2012 - 12:00pm to 2:00pm

Location:

Council Chamber, Chapel Hill Town Hall
