CH Town Council 20 somethings Cohen - Chilton - Storrow meet at the 12/5 council meeting

I attended last night's Chapel Hill Town Council meeting, my first since 1983. Mayor Mark K was kind enought to recognize the former council members in attendance -- me, Mark Chilton, Joe Capowski (and by the end of the meeting, Sally Greene)

Chapelboro had a great writer-up of the assemblage of 20 something council members at

http://www.chapelboro.com/Storrow-Swears-In-With-a-Little-Help-From-His-Frie/11655162 I won't repeat it.

Mark Chilton administered Lee's oath of office, and it was nice to meet old and new friends.

I did go back last week and check my 1973-75 campaign finance reports and Lee Storrow's 2011 report to see if any of the same people gave to both -- and I found 3: Jane Brown, Jane Stein, and Catherine DeVine.

Student forum for Town Council candidates

UNC Student Government and Campus Y host candidate forum: What do candidates really think about town-and-gown relations?

As a student of social justice at Chapel Hill’s largest employer, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, I am acutely aware of the impact my education plays on the economic and demographic make-up of our community. With the UNC Student Government and Campus Y (the center for social justice on campus) coming together on November 3, 2011, to host a candidate forum, I had hoped students would finally have their most salient concerns heard by potential council representatives. Even more, I was optimistic that students without cars or a thorough understanding of the intricate bus system would finally gain access to the campaign process, which has built to a climax over the past weeks.

Filling vacancies: school board, Chapel Hill, and Carrboro

Up til 1955 the CH Town Council filled vacancies on the school board, then it went to elections to fill vacancies, but the local acts were unclear how to deal with this. The general law just said refer to the local act. In 1973 there was a 2 year vacancy and the Board of Elections put it on the ballot as a separate election. The powers that be did not like this, and the school board asked the legislature to change this so the low vote-getting winner got a shorter term. The legislature did this in 1974, then did it again in in 1975.

Improper Record Keeping at Hillsborough Police Department?

I just received the following press release from the town of Hillsborough. I wonder what impact this will have on the sheriff's race, where (recently) former Hillsborough Police Chief Clarence Birkhead is challenging incumbent Sheriff Lindy Pendergrass, with early voting starting today. Because this is the first I have heard of this issue, I have no idea if it's significant that the town chose to put out a press release today, as opposed to waiting until the investigation was completed. The timing seems odd to me, and from the press release it's unclear that the police department (or its leadership) did anything wrong if indeed their accrediting agency instructed them to backdate reports. Is there anyone more familiar with this issue who can comment?

Candidates Website Reviews

I will be posting a review of the candidate's websites for County Commissioner. It is interesting to look at the different campaign websites and see who is internet savy and who is just outdated. A similar project to when Ruby looked at the candidate's different yard signs. After County Commissioner, County School Board and Sheriff candidates will follow. Have you looked at the websites and seen any you specifically like or dislike? Let me know!

Tonight's State of the Union Address

Tonight at 9pm President Obama will give his first State of the Union address where I imagine he'll both look back at what has happened in the past year, as well as where we are heading in the years to come. I'll be listening on NPR for the first part since I'll be driving home from Raleigh to Chapel Hill at 9 (I checked with the WUNC Interim Program Director and they will be broadcasting it). Since many local elections are the country will be affected the general mood towards Democrats, and President Obama is the captain of that ship, I think it is a good time to look at what he has accomplished, and what he still needs to do.

2010 Senate Democractic Primary

Since this area plays such a strong role in the democratic politics/ideals in this state, & since one of our own might join the race, I think this will be an interesting topic for discussion.
Secretary of State Elaine Marshall vs Durham Lawyer Kenneth Lewis vs Captain in the United States Army Reserve & former State Senator Cal Cunningham vs Mayor Kevin Foy

vs vs vs

Election law changes for 2010 - late absentee ballots accepted

Because of rightful pushback from military and overseas voters, the 2009 General Assembly made some significant changes in the absentee voting law effective 1/1/2010, among them:

1) Number of witnesses on an absentee ballot dropped from two to one

2) For the presidential general election, ballots will be mailed out 60 days before the election, rather than 50 days.

3) Current law requires ballots to be received by 5:00 pm on the DAY BEFORE the election. New law provides for ALL PRIMARIES AND ELECTIONS that:

        a. for military and overseas voters, ballot must be received by 5:00 pm on Friday, three days AFTER the election. There is no postmark requirement, as the military rarely uses postmarks.
