immigrants and Chapel Hill

Yesterday I visited the Roots Restaurant on Franlin St and talked to  a sister of some of the guys who were recently detained by ICE. You can help them out by donating. https://www.gofundme.com/deportation-defense-fund And today I read a facebook post by Ruby about another situation. "Rosa del Carmen Ortez-Cruz came to the U.S. from Honduras in 2002, fleeing extreme domestic violence – she was stabbed multiple times by a former partner, spending over a month in the hospital at age 19. She is the mother of four children, three of whom are U.S. citizens. Not only is Honduras one of the most dangerous countries in the world, but Rosa cannot return because her abuser has threatened her life.

I am seeing strange posts on Facebook telling people to register to vote in late May. The deadline for regular registration is Apr. 13 for the May 8 primary. My understanding is 17 year olds who turn 18 before the Nov. 2018 election can vote in the May primary. I hope all the high schools encourage students to register to vote.

"Did you make a resolution about voting in the new year? Here are 8 reminders to ensure you can cast votes in the 2018 primary and general elections and beyond. Please take a few minutes now to ensure you’re ready to vote this year in North Carolina."

election polling

Second attempt. I just received a long 4th Congressional District polling call. They listed a number of positive and negatives about each candidate and asked your opinion. Did anyone else get polled? Also while in Ohio at my father in laws I got the same type of poll about Democratic candidates for Ohio Governor.

I just wrote a blog and it wouldn't post. What is going on.

2017 election results

FYI: I get this message: "The form has become outdated. Copy any unsaved work in the form below." Only 2 of the 3 candidates for council I supported this year won. All of the candidates are good folk and the winners will serve Chapel Hill well. Here are the election results for the last 4 cycles (eight years.) Voters can vote for up to 4 candidates for the Town Council. I ran and lost in 2013 which was the year with the lowest turnout: only 63% of this year's turn out. However, only about 17.5% voted this year. This is still a much lower rate than my hometown of Tiffin, Ohio.
