Racial & Economic Justice

Talking about Race in Orange County - Undoing Racism training

I am midway through a two-day workshop called 'Undoing Racism', which is being held at and co-sponsored by the United Church of Chapel Hill. We have over 35 people attending the workshop including UNC grad students, staff, researchers, and community partners, a handful of Justice United members, a teacher from the Chapel Hill-Carrboro School District, staff from Active Living By Design, and parishioners and clergy from the UCCH and it's sister church, Fisher Memorial (a Black church in Durham).

This workshop is providing a lot of food for thought about how racism was constructed and is perpetuated. Seems to me this might be a really good opportunity to get some much needed community discussisons about race started.

Below (More Information) is a link for more information on the workshop.

What do you think? Would you attend? Should community groups, such as Justice United and/or Justice In Action co-sponsor something like this? Is it even needed?

December Political Prisoner Letter Writing Night

Join Internationalist Books and the Internationalist Prison Books Collective for December's Political Prisoner Letter Writing Night, Wednesday December 15!

Come and write a birthday card to political prisoners whose birthdays fall in the month of December. They're sure to need some love during the Holiday season!

Ed Poindexter - an ex-Black Panther targeted by FBI's COINTELPRO,

Tsutomu Shirosaki - a Japanese national accused of being a part of the Japanese Red Army,

Zolo Ahona Azania - a former Black Panther convicted of a bank robbery,

Fred Burton - an innocent man convicted in a sham trial for killing a cop, and

Jerome White-Bey - an anarchist prison activist who has helped to fight slave labor in prisons by organizing the Missouri Prison Labor Union.

Souls to the polls

It may be hard to think of a tax increase as "justice," but Orange County has an example of just that in its proposal on the November ballot to raise the sales tax by one-quarter cent. A portion of the revenue if this wins approval will go toward providing a solution for Habitat for Humanity homeowners in Efland (many of whose homes were built by our member churches), who have been facing a 300 percent increase in their sewer rates. Justice United agrees that this tax increase, which means paying 25 cents more per every $100 you spend, equals social justice.

We will gather at 9:30am at United Church.  After a brief press conference with our partner groups, we will walk over to the Seymour Center to cast our votes.

CHAPEL HILL/CARRBORO NAACP BRANCH TO HOST LAUNCH EVENT FOR MARCH ON WASHINGTON

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Chapel Hill/Carrboro branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is hosting a launch event at Vimala’s Curryblossom Cafe on Thursday, Sept. 30, 2010, at 6 p.m., to support participants of the One Nation Working Together March On Washington on Saturday October 2, 2010.

The NAACP hopes to bring together the social justice community in support of more than 50 local residents  and 50 UNC students who will board buses in Chapel Hill and make the trek from Chapel Hill to the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., to fight for jobs, affordable housing and education.

The March on Washington is a symbolic representation of the historic march that occurred in 1963 where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech in front of over 200,000 supporters advocating civil and economic rights for African-Americans.  The goal of “One Nation Working Together” is to mobilize the nation as one to put Americans back to work, stimulate the economy, ensure the protection, civil rights, and liberties of all people, and invest in high-quality education for all youth.

Tens of thousands of people are expected to attend.

Buses are leaving the University Mall at 4 a.m. on Saturday and will return at 11 p.m. the same day.  The cost to ride is $45/person and one meal is included.
