If you actually want people to read the (few) articles you are publishing online, it would help to not put flashing eyesores like this on the same page as the news.
You're letting the DTH make you look bad....

Yet another reason to buy the N&O.

Hmm ... not sure how to take that DTH comment. But I do know that I Adblocked that gif file the first time I saw it.
I can't think of a good reason to buy either the N&O or the DMH - and this comment is from a guy who loves reading newspapers. The DMH is butt-ugly with looney editorial positions more often than not. That's definitely too high a price to pay just to get the Chapel Hill Herald.
And the N&O? Don't get me started. The news coverage is decent, but why subsidize a paper whose editorial page actually supported the Alito nomination . . . and seems unable to find a coherent position on Bush's Iraq Debacle?
Ruby--
Those of us who like print media? Sorry--but I still don't like camping out with my desk top and morning coffee. I like to take the paper out onto my deck and patio, and read it of a morning. It's harder to share sections of a computer.
I don't have a lap-top...but if I did, I STILL don't see myself perusing it the way I do the paper. There's that whole glare issue...
Guess I'm just a luddite at heart.
James--I think the N&O does a pretty good job with the local AND national news--and for now, they are the only game in town. I quit reading pretty much anyone but Molly Ivins on the editorial page years ago...though I do still read the letters-to-the editor.
Besides, they have decent comics.

According to the print HS, a new and improved website will be launched July 4th.
Their definition of improved is really flashy? We'll see.
The new website looks really nice. Much better. More useable, too.
The cosmetic changes alone constitute an improvement. It's more useable because one can look at it without throwing up.
Ruby, the only ad I see on the front page is a banner ad at the bottom. And I saw one not-too-bad ad on a page with a story.
The navigation is much better! The top bar for navigation is a huge improvement. It's also much easier to find the "Orange" page, which is where I head after the front page.
"Cosmetics" are a big part of usability. The fact that I could easily navigate the site on first view with the new changes is a good sign.

I can't help but wonder how many photosensitive epileptics are thrown into seizures by these stupid strobbing ads.
