Orange County Commissioners
The Historic Rogers Road Neighborhood Task Force continues its work but has a
new barrier to contend with that may preclude the Orange County Board of
Commissioners from taking action. As reported in this story
by Chapelboro, an EPA complaint filed by the Rogers-Eubanks
Neighborhood Association in 2007 alleges the Orange County Planning and
Inspections Department (OCPID) "intentionally discriminated on the basis
of race by denying water and sewer service to the African American
residents of the Rogers Road Community." The full letter from the EPA to

At
the recent task force meeting held on July 17, 2013, Board of Commissioners representatives Renee Price and Penny Rich abstained from several votes on recommendations of what
to include in the task force's final report, citing the EPA complaint.
In a tight Democratic primary involving 3 candidates for 2 seats in Orange County's district 1, civil rights attorney and former Carrboro alderman Mark Dorosin came out ahead with 10,474 votes. He will be joined on the Board of Commissioners by current Chapel Hill Town Council member Penny Rich (9709 votes). Because there was no Republican primary in district 1 this year, Dorosin and Rich will take their seats after the general election in November. They will replace outgoing commissioner Valerie Foushee and incumbent commissioner Pam Hemminger (9167 votes).
The Orange County Board of Commissioners will vote in May, one week after the primary election, whether to put a half-cent transit tax on the ballot for voters to decide. The transit tax is a critical component of our region's long-term transit and growth plans, and it's time for Orange County voters to join Durham County and vote for expanded transit service to ensure a more sustainable Orange County in the future.
Welcome to the open thread for tonight's Orange County Board of Commissioners candidate forum for the Democratic primary election. There are three candidates for two seats in District 1, two candidates for one seat in District 2, and one candidate unopposed for an at-large seat.

Orange County today announced that two public hearings on the transit tax and overall transit plan will be held in April. The hearings are designed to elicit feedback from members of the public on how the County should approach transit in the coming years. They will be part of regularly-scheduled meetings of the County Board of Commissioners, and will have two general parts.
First, a presentation will be given to detail various elements of the plan: the legislative issues involved in issuing the tax, the partnership with Durham County, the revenues, the expenditures, the timeline, etc. Second, members of the public will have the chance to speak on the plan by making comments, offering suggestions or posing questions.
The first hearing will be held in Hillsborough on April 3 at the Social Services in Hillsborough Commons. The second hearing will be at the on April 17 in Chapel Hill at the Southern Human Services. Be sure to come out and urge the commissioners to support transit and put the tax on the ballot this Fall!

The Orange County Board of Commissioners again considered transit earlier this evening at its biweekly meeting. After a litany of other agenda items, county planning director Craig Benedict
outlined a timeline for placing the transit tax on the ballot. At the remaining work session and regular meeting in March, the commissioners will presented with information on the cost sharing for the regional transit program and agree to some conception of it. In April, the town will hold two public meetings and draft the official transit plan for the country.
The candidate filing period for the May 8 primary elections begins today at noon. In Orange County, 10 seats in various state and county races are up for grabs.
