Hillsborough
A work day planned for Greensboro on Saturday thankfully fell through, so I told my wife instead I would lunch at Weaver Street, then wander up to the Town Barn for the Confederate flag rally, and... would she honor me her company? She was shocked. Shocked! But, I reminded her what a gorgeous day it was, we needed lunch anyway, and wouldn't she rather meet and talk with folks she wanted to hate, to find out if they really were as loathsome as she believed? As for me, I was going to go with her or without because, as a photographer, I wouldn't miss it unless I had no other choice.

Frances Henry wasn’t really welcomed to Hillsborough with open arms when his upset bid topped other contenders in the foreclosure auction of the Colonial Inn back in 2001. Around the same time he had acquired Chapel Hills’s Rathskeller, or “The Rat” as we all knew it, as well as the Martin-Dey House next to UNC’s Delta Upsilon fraternity, of which he was a member in his university days. The Rat continued its downward spiral and the Martin-Dey house was a subject of much press because Henry intended to tear it down, while preservationists wanted to, well, preserve it. Mr Henry’s name in Chapel Hill circles was becoming questionable. I guess the Old Guard in Hillsborough was worried about what this interloper might do to the historic Colonial Inn in their fair town. Egads – maybe he simply enjoys destroying history!
Next Monday, the words "Confederate Memorial" on the façade of the Orange County Historical Museum may move one step closer to being removed.
The Hillsborough Board of Commissioners next meets at 7 p.m. July 13 in the Whitted Human Services Center.
The agenda is available now on the town website and includes various items, including a discussion and possible action on the “Confederate Memorial” lettering on the exterior of the building located at 201 N. Churton St.
It seems likely that the, should the town decide to act on town manager Eric Peterson's recommended, a Certificate of Appropriateness may first need to be obtained from the Historic District Commission.

Regional Transit has come to Efland and Mebane, as of today!
Triangle Transit's Orange-Durham Express (ODX) route, which started operating in August 2014, has now expanded its service. The route now connects Mebane, Efland, Hillsborough, Duke University, and Downtown Durham.
Extensive mold and other serious maintenance issues, unannounced inspections, living with no water, play equipment removed, violence, disrepect by management, inability to use shared resources, children not allowed to play outside.....
Would you be surprised to know that these are just some of the complaints coming from our neighbors who live in affordable housing complexes throughout Orange County (Chapel Hill, Carrboro, and Hillsborough)?
Orange County Justice United is partnering with residents in all of these complexes to organize the community, conduct neighborhood audits to acertain the extend of the issues, present these findings to management, and have the issues addressed.

We know that there is a shortage of affordable housing in our communities. We must work to ensure that the affordable housing that is available, is welcoming unless we want to be a community of the wealthy.
Addressing affordable housing so that all people can afford to live in our community is an extremely important issue to many in our community. It has been given as a reason to develop and redevelop our towns and as a reason not to. Many organizations including the Community Home Trust, EmPOWERment Inc., Habitat for Humanity, the InterFaith Council, CASA, Orange County Justice United, and The Marion Cheek Jackson Center have been working with the towns and county to provide and/or advocate for housing at prices attainable across all spectrums of income.
In this season of municipal budget discussions, a rundown of what our towns and elected boards are working on around affordable housing seems appropriate. I asked members of each elected board what their board is focused on this year. Here is a summary.
Orange County residents will have a chance to provide input on future Orange County bus services in a series of public meetings in various locations, including the town of Hillsborough.
The Orange County Planning and Inspections Department and Triangle Transit are hosting the public outreach meetings, which will focus on bus services outlined in the Orange County Bus and Rail Investment Plan. Bus routes to be discussed include the Hillsborough Circulator as well as rural and regional service routes. The goal of the meetings is to receive input on specific recommendations for new, expanded and existing bus services that serve central and rural Orange County.
There will be four public outreach meetings, held from 5:30 to 7 p.m., except as noted below:
- May 19 — in the Northern Human Services Center cafeteria at Cedar Grove Park, 5800 N.C. 86 N., south of Hillsborough.
- May 21 — in the Mebane Council Chambers, 106 E. Washington St. in Mebane
- May 22 — in the Hillsborough Town Barn, located at 101 E. Orange St. on the Hillsborough Town Hall campus. Parking is accessed from East Corbin Street. ***This meeting is from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m.***
- May 28 — at Efland-Cheeks Community Center, 117 Richmond Road in Efland
A presentation will be given at the beginning of each meeting, and stations will be set up for attendees to learn more about proposed new bus services and ask questions. Comments about the proposed routes also may provided by e-mail to [email protected] or by voicemail at 919-245-2336.
