Regional Transit has come to Efland and Mebane, as of today!
Triangle Transit's Orange-Durham Express (ODX) route, which started operating in August 2014, has now expanded its service. The route now connects Mebane, Efland, Hillsborough, Duke University, and Downtown Durham.
All persons interested in the proposed Durham-Orange Light Rail Transit Project will get an update this fall on the 17-mile project.
"The upcoming meetings will give residents information on the environmental work that's underway," said David King, Triangle Transit General Manager. "Hearing concerns from the public will assist us as we complete the Draft Environmental Impact Statement that will be published and available for public comment next spring."
Four workshops will be held in November:
- Tuesday, November 18, 11 A.M. to 2 P.M. - Durham Station Transportation Center, 517 W. Pettigrew Street, Durham, 27701
- Tuesday, November 18, 4 P.M. to 7 P.M. - UNC Friday Center, Chapel Hill, 27517

The proposed light rail line will run from Chapel Hill to East Durham serving UNC Hospitals and UNC, Mason Farm Road, Friday Center, Leigh Village, Patterson Place, South Square, Duke University, Duke University Medical Center, the VA Medical Center, downtown Durham and Alston Avenue/NC Central University.
In February, the Federal Transit Administration gave Triangle Transit the go-ahead to enter Project Development. The proposed Durham-Orange Light Rail Transit Project is one of two light rail projects nationwide approved by the US Department of Transportation this year.
The project cost is estimated at $1.34 billion dollars (in 2012 dollars). Voters in Durham and Orange counties approved a one-half cent sales tax to fund the local share of the light rail project along with new and expanded bus service.

By 2035, the Durham-Chapel Hill-Carrboro area is expected to add nearly 200,000 residents and approximately 120,000 jobs. In 2011, Durham County residents demonstrated their support for transit initiatives by approving the transit sales tax. In 2012, Orange County residents concurred, approving a transit tax of their own. Light rail transit between the Durham-Orange Corridor’s three main activity centers—UNC (Hospitals and University), Duke (Medical Center and University), and downtown Durham—has been proposed as a means to support the growth. Triangle Transit is pleased to report that planning for the proposed Durham-Orange Light Rail Transit (D-O LRT) Project has reached the project development phase, and Triangle Transit is studying the social, environmental, and human impacts of the proposed project. And Chapel Hill Transit’s North-South Corridor, along with other service changes, will help address growth and congestion. The Orange County Planning and Inspections Department and Triangle Transit are hosting the public outreach meetings, which will focus on bus services outlined in the Orange County Bus and Rail Investment Plan. Bus routes to be discussed include the Hillsborough Circulator as well as rural and regional service routes. The goal of the meetings is to receive input on specific recommendations for new, expanded and existing bus services that serve central and rural Orange County.
There will be four public outreach meetings, held from 5:30 to 7 p.m., except as noted below:
- May 19 — in the Northern Human Services Center cafeteria at Cedar Grove Park, 5800 N.C. 86 N., south of Hillsborough.
