Orange County Central + Rural Bus Service Public Input Meeting

Orange County residents will have a chance to provide input on future Orange County bus services in a series of public meetings in various locations, including the town of Hillsborough.

The Orange County Planning and Inspections Department and Triangle Transit are hosting the public outreach meetings, which will focus on bus services outlined in the Orange County Bus and Rail Investment Plan. Bus routes to be discussed include the Hillsborough Circulator as well as rural and regional service routes. The goal of the meetings is to receive input on specific recommendations for new, expanded and existing bus services that serve central and rural Orange County.

There will be four public outreach meetings, held from 5:30 to 7 p.m., except as noted below:

  • May 19 — in the Northern Human Services Center cafeteria at Cedar Grove Park, 5800 N.C. 86 N., south of Hillsborough.
  • May 21 — in the Mebane Council Chambers, 106 E. Washington St. in Mebane
  • May 22 — in the Hillsborough Town Barn, located at 101 E. Orange St. on the Hillsborough Town Hall campus. Parking is accessed from East Corbin Street. ***This meeting is from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m.***
  • May 28 — at Efland-Cheeks Community Center, 117 Richmond Road in Efland

A presentation will be given at the beginning of each meeting, and stations will be set up for attendees to learn more about proposed new bus services and ask questions. Comments about the proposed routes also may provided by e-mail to OCBUSPLAN@orangecountync.gov or by voicemail at 919-245-2336.

Town Hall Series: Let your voice be heard!

As the new State Senator, especially one appointed by a committee, I feel an obligation to proactively engage my new constituents and give them the opportunity to voice their concerns. One of my favorite quotes is by Alastair Farrugia, "Freedom is when the people can speak;  democracy is when the government listens." I take that to heart and I hope these Town Hall meetings can be a positive conversation about how to move our state forward. We face a lot of challenges and I also want the opportunity to present my progressive agenda for the upcoming session. I understand the political realities of the General Assembly, but it's critical that we begin to articulate a Democratic agenda and fight back against the intolerant and harmful policies the legislature has given us.

Municipal Election Filing Nears: Potential Candidates for Hillsborough Town Board

Continuing our series about upcoming municipal elections, here's a look at what's happening in the northern part of the county in the race for Hillsborough Town Board. As a reminder, election filing opens in just a few weeks on July 5th. (You can read my post about Chapel Hill Town Council here and Molly's post about Chapel Hill-Carrboro School Board here.)

There are two incumbents up for re-election this year:

Mike Gering was first elected to the Hillsborough Town Board in 2001, and has announced that he will not be seeking re-election this year. "The town is in good shape, and I believe change is healthy - both for me and for the town," Gering said in a news release, as reported by the News & Observer.

Frances Dancy also faces re-election this year. Dancy will complete her fourth term on the Town Board this year, and has not yet announced whether she will seek a fifth term yet.
